Sterling Community Health Assessment 2010

Since 2008, quite a number of collaborators have been brought together who share in the specific health and wellness mission of Bon Secours St. Francis.

The list includes:

The main project of this group was to create a Health Assessment of the Sterling community on multiple levels: physical health, perceptions of health and barriers to health, infrastructure challenges, and access to healthcare and healthy nutrition.

The team has completed the following:

  • Over 150 door to door surveys
  • An estimated 20 focus groups
  • A physical assessment of all roads and sidewalk conditions in the community
  • A map of food stores.
  • Assessment of workplace policy, community centers, and healthcare facilities.

The above and other data has been compiled and analyzed in 2010 to share with the Sterling residents and wider Greenville community to educate and advocate for changes that help remove many of the physical and nutritional barriers to poor health in Sterling and West Greenville.

This effort will give more impetus for the needed changes identified in the Master Plan and beyond as well as offer a model of collaborative change for other Greenville communities to follow.

The health data thus far has revealed Sterling to show a high instance of obesity, chronic disease, and lack of physical activity amongst the residents surveyed.  The majority of road and sidewalk conditions are Fair to Poor.

The full presentation will be posted soon! Stay tuned for more exciting updates going into 2011!
